WARTBURG parts and accessories

Wartburg is a brand of passenger cars which belongs to Industrieverband Fahrzeugbau (IFA). Cars were produced under it from 1956 till 1991 at VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach in East Germany. Most vehicles were made for selling in Europe.

The model range included passenger cars in different body versions. They were a saloon, 3- and 5-door estate cars, coupe, roadster, convertible, pickup.

• Stylish exterior. The body was coated with glossy synthetic polymers, and the radiator grille shape was non-standard: long and narrow. Besides, unusual trimming colours were offered. The roadster 313 was honoured with the title of «The Most Beautiful European Car» at the New York International Auto Show in 1958.
• Great manoeuvrability and road-holding ability. Testing of model 311 showed that the low centre of gravity helped to stabilize car position quickly in cornering. Tests were performed in 1959 by independent experts – specialists of the German monthly magazine KFT.
• Variety of available body versions. Particularly, model 311 had a body-on-frame design which allowed assembling cars with different bodies.
• Reliable braking system. For example, LAD brake boosters were mounted on the rear axle of brand estate cars and pickups since 1975. It affected positively the vehicle stopping speed in case of an emergency.
• Efficient engines. Models 311, 312, 313 and 353 were equipped with 3-cylinder petrol power units with a displacement of about 1 litre. Despite low fuel consumption, they were rather high-performance: their output reached 50 hp. Since 1988, the cars were equipped with 4-cylinder engines developed by Volkswagen AG.
