Faults of suspension

  • worn or damaged shock absorbers;
  • deformation or damage of suspension arms;
  • damage to suspension ball joints;
  • wear of anti-roll bar;
  • deformation of the side bar;
  • silent blocks wear or damage.

Symptoms of suspension faults

  • abnormal sounds underneath the vehicle while driving;
  • roll to one side;
  • pulling to one side while driving;
  • vibration while driving at high engine speeds;
  • partial loss of the vehicle control when cornering and braking;
  • jamming of the brake system;
  • oil leaks underneath.

Causes of suspension failure

  • failure to comply with the vehicle operation rules;
  • impact of moisture and large temperature fluctuations;
  • use of low-quality consumables, oil and spare parts;
  • looseness of shock absorbers mountings;
  • violation of the drive axles parallel arrangement;
  • different damping force of shock absorbers;
  • different tire pressure;
  • jamming of the brake system;
  • failure or wear of springs;
  • improper wheel balancing;
  • loosening of the wheel mounts;
  • absence or low amount of lubricant in the system;
  • violation of wheel alignment;
  • wear of dust caps and seals.

Diagnostics

Analysis of the system is carried out by two people. First, the system nodes are checked, which are most susceptible to malfunctions: shock absorbers, ball joints, stabilizer rods and steering links, as well as constant velocity joints.

You need to periodically replenish oil level in the system and monitor the condition of the bearings.

Free play of struts and stabilizers is checked by the car rolling. If there is excessive clearance, you will hear a click. Then you should check all the dust caps and seals. Diagnosis of the suspension must be carried out every 50 000-70 000 kilometers.

Repair and replacement of suspension components

Suspension elements wear out unevenly, so replacement of the entire suspension system is required only in case of serious accidents and bottom bumps.

Small deformation of all-metal parts is allowed (curvature of no more than 10% from the ideal state), but they are aligned on a special stand when possible.

Repair work requires experience, specific knowledge, special tools and the participation of several people, so it should be carried out in a service shop. If a damage occurs to a separate part, a mandatory diagnosis of related mechanisms is carried out.
