Ignition system failures
- Complete absence of ignition;
- No voltage on spark plugs;
- No current delivery to ignition coil;
- Electrical circuit faults:
- Broken wire;
- Contact oxidation;
- Contact greasing;
- No connection.
Signs of ignition system failure
- Hindered engine start;
- Unusual sounds at engine start or at idle;
- Loss of engine power;
- Excessive oil consumption;
- Engine wobble at idle or when driving.
Causes of ignition system faults
- Blowing or damage of spark plugs;
- Shorting of the electrical circuit;
- Corrosion or blowing of conductors;
- Using low quality components;
- Violation of parts installation and operation rules;
- Aggressive environment impact (weather and temperature conditions, dirt and mechanical damage);
- Dynamic and sporting vehicle driving;
- Frequent engine starts and its long operation at idle.
Diagnostics
You should run an inspection of all ignition components every 10 000 – 30 000 kilometers of driving. You can do it on your own as well as in a service center. Spark plugs should be clean, without sooting or fouling. Using ohmmeter you need to check resistance of rotor resistor. Its normal level is within 0,9 – 1,1 kiloohm. Also check high voltage wiring and insulation condition. Likewise you should check wire fastening and ignition coil connection. You can detect a defective spark plug by visual inspection or their successive disconnection. Remember that ignition system inspection should be held only with a shutdown engine.
Repair and replacement of ignition system parts
You can perfectly replace ignition system items by yourself. Spark plugs should be replaced every 20 000 kilometers of driving even if they look clean. You can repair fractions and peeling off insulation of wiring, but it is better to replace the damaged section. The best way to detect and repair high voltage and low voltage systems faults is to get your car to a service shop.
