Characteristics of SAE 10W-40 motor oils
Lubricants of this viscosity are now among the most popular in areas of moderate climate. They are able to protect the power unit against breakdown in severe cold and retain great lubricating properties at continuous loads. Belonging to 10W class means that the product doesn’t freeze at −30 °С and higher. In such conditions the oil pump can faultlessly work, and the engine will start. In case of lower temperature, one should use products of lower viscosity, otherwise engine start will be troubled.
The figure 40 allows to learn the parameters of the lubricating liquid at high temperatures. So, the kinematic viscosity of SAE 10W-40 oil can vary within 12.6 – 16.3 mm2/s, and its dynamic viscosity is 2.9 mPa⋅s.
