The Rover 800 vehicles were manufactured from 1986 until 1999. The assembly was carried out in the British city of Birmingham. These cars were used by the British government and police forces as official vehicles. Their twin models are Sterling 825 and 827.
The history of Rover 800
The new model had one generation and two facelifts. It was developed in collaboration with Honda Motor Company. At first, only saloons were offered to the customers but in 1988 five-door hatchbacks also entered the production. In 1992, coupés became available as well. They were created especially for the US market, yet ended up being sold in other countries, too. The assembly of the coupés involved a lot of tasks done manually.
On the whole, 317,306 units of the model were produced. Its peak of popularity was in 1987: the manufacturer produced 54,434 that year. In early and mid-1990s, these cars were considered to be best-sellers in their segment in Great Britain.
The features of Rover 800 (I generation, facelifts)
In 1991, the car was facelifted for the first time. The rear part of the body became slightly longer, so the luggage compartment got larger. The radiator grille bars were now vertical, and the grille had a chrome frame. The body became more streamlined which resulted in better aerodynamics.
In 1996, the exterior of the model was slightly altered again: the black radiator grille was replaced with a silver one and mouldings became colour-coded. The interior featured more wooden elements. The list of standard equipment included the front passenger airbag and climate control. All trim levels except for the base one offered an audio system with a six-disc CD-changer.
