Volkswagen Golf is one of the most popular models in the world. Production of these cars started in 1974. Today car are assembled in Germany, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, Algeria, China, the USA, Indonesia, Russia. The car is sold around the world. In North America the car was also known as Rabbit, in Mexico – Caribe, in South Africa – Citi Golf. The model was twice awarded “European Car of the Year”: in 1992 and 2013. In 2010 the car took “South African Car of the Year” award from South African Guild of Motoring Journalists; and three years later the car won the “World Car of the Year” award. In 2015 the car was picked as favourite by editors of Yahoo Autos online-media.

History of Volkswagen Golf

The model has seven generations and one restyled version. The first generation, Typ 17, was produced in a convertible, 3- and 5-door hatchback versions. All cars had front-wheel drive and liquid cooling system. These cars consumed fuel efficiently. They instantly became popular due to oil crisis in 70’s of the last century.

Start of second model generation Typ 19E (later – Typ 1G)  production took place in 1983. The cars became longer than their predecessors by 165 mm, wider by 55 mm and higher – by 20 mm. Volkswagen Golf crossover entered the market. For the first time cars of this model were equipped with power steering, central locking and power windows.

In the third generation, Typ 1H, production of which started in 1991, the list of available body styles was extended with a station wagon. And in 1997, the fourth generation of the model (Typ 1J) was unveiled; it became the top-selling car in Europe in 2001. This car’s body was made of zinc-coated steel and the manufacturer provided a 12-year warranty against perforation corrosion.

In 2003, the successful fourth generation of the model was replaced by new cars – Typ 1K. Turbo-charged diesel power unit “Pumpe Düse” with direct injection was presented in the list of available engines. These cars were built on the A5 (PQ35) platform, with independent front and rear suspensions.

Typ 5K, the sixth generation, that has appeared in 2008, was characterised by excellent sound-proofing. The manufacturer was able to achieve this by using dampening film on the windshield and side windows. Passenger compartment of these cars was equipped with 7 airbags and ESP, which allowed Typ 5K car to score maximum stars in Euro NCAP crash-test in “Occupant protection” category.

Production of the seventh generation (Typ 5G) started in 2012. It was one of the first cars of the company, created on the MQB modular platform, which allowed to reduce full weight of the car and improve its driving performance. In 2013 the model received “Car of the Year Japan” award, becoming a first car of European production to get it.

Features of restyled Volkswagen Golf Typ 5G cars

In 2017 the company launched a restyled version of the seventh generation – updated station wagon and 5-door hatchback. Chromed edging of the radiator grille, relief front bumper, narrow headlights with sharp edges – the car looks stylish and dynamic. Body lines are now more smooth, front fog lights are decorated with massive frames.

Comfortable seats, interior trim made of high-quality materials and luggage compartment with high capacity (up to 1270 liters for Golf hatchback and 1620 – for station wagon) make the car very comfortable to use. In the basic configuration, TrendLine, the car is equipped with halogen headlights, in which LEDs are built in as daytime running lights. Fully LED headlights and LED fog lights are optionally available.

The TrendLine configuration also includes air-conditioner and onboard computer with Plus display. Parking assistant, system of emergency braking (Front Assist) and blind spot monitoring system are additionally available. Also, a special screen ActiveInfoDisplay can be installed. Information from assisting systems is presented on it.
