The Dodge Viper vehicle was manufactured between 1992 and 2017. It was assembled in the USA. In 2014, the model was on the Most American Cars list due to the fact that more than 75% of its parts were made in the USA. Its twin is a similar car manufactured under the brand Chrysler.
History of the Dodge Viper vehicles
The model is presented by five generations and four facelifted versions. The first generation had the SR I index and entered the production in 1992 with the roadster body style. The prototype of these cars was famous Ford Shelby Cobra Daytona with its powerful engine and minimalistic aggressive appearance. Carroll Shelby, the creator of the legendary AC Cobra, participated in designing the Viper.
At first, the model was equipped with the 8 l Magnum V10 engine but its weight turned out to be too big. Then, together with the Lamborghini specialists, they made a lighter, aluminium one. Exhaust pipes placed inside the door sills made the car look exotic. The body of the car was also unusual being a steel frame with fibreglass panels.
The second generation, the SR II, entered the production in 1996. The exhaust pipes of the new roadster were located in the rear end. The manufacturer managed to reduce the weight of the vehicle replacing some steel elements of the suspension with aluminium parts.
The GTS coupe was introduced as a representative of the generation and had an unusual roof. It had a dome shape above the seats, which was very comfortable for racing drivers wearing motorsport helmets. This car was equipped with an air conditioning system and power windows. The Dodge Viper GTS coupe took part in the famous Indianapolis 500 race.
The ZB I generation appeared in 2003. They started to fit the roadster with an engine outputting 500 hp. The manufacturer also used a lighter and stiffer chassis. The new coupe was introduced two years later. Thanks to outstanding aerodynamic parameters, it could acquire the speed of up to 310 km/h.
In 2008, the company introduced the ZB II generation. The coupe and roadster were fitted with a 600 hp engine designed together with McLaren Automotive specialists. The model was equipped with the auto-locking differential ViscoLok and an updated suspension with stiffer springs. As a result, the acceleration dynamics and steering stability improved. In 2010, production of these cars was discontinued.
The fifth generation, the VX I was unveiled two years later at the New York Auto Show. The model was presented by the SRT coupe whose standard equipment included multifunction steering wheel, keyless entry system, cruise control. The safety of the new car was ensured with traction control, electronic stability programme and other systems.
Features of the Dodge Viper VX I cars facelift
The facelifted model appeared in 2015. The renewed coupe had a large bumper grille with rounded corners, narrow headlights fitted with LEDs – daytime running lights. There were an air intake and six air vents made in the textured bonnet. The sportiness of the car was emphasised by elegant, sculpted sides of the body and triangular exhaust pipes placed inside the door sills.
As for the technical equipment, the output of the installed engine was increased up to 645 hp. Along with that, the company succeeded in improving the efficiency of the power unit. The seats of the Viper coupe were heated, the dashboard was fitted with an 8.4 inch touch screen. There was a navigation system for the driver’s convenience.
Higher trim levels included two air vents in the bonnet instead of the usual six and also black Venom wheel rims, aluminium elements used in the interior. In 2017 the model was discontinued.
