Zastava Automobiles is a Serbian enterprise that existed from 1953 to 2008. The company was located in Kragujevac and assembled cars under license from Fiat Automobiles S.p.A., mainly for the East European market. In the 70s of the XX century, the production volume grew and part of the cars was exported to 76 countries. A total of about 4,100,000 units were assembled.

The model range included passenger cars: saloons, estate cars, 5- and 3-door hatchbacks, pickups. The production of small convertibles started late in the 1980s. All cars were assembled on the basis of Fiat vehicles. For example, Yugo 311 from the Serbian manufacturer is a twin of Fiat 128.

Advantages of the models

• Compactness. These vehicles had small sizes which allowed to easily manoeuvre in heavy traffic. For instance, the length of a 3-door hatchback Yugo Koral was 3,490 mm, width – 1,540 mm, height – 1,340 mm.
• Capacious luggage compartment. Despite small dimensions, the vehicles had large luggage compartments. For example, the luggage compartment capacity of the 5-door hatchback Yugo Skala reached 1,010 litres with folded rear seats.
• Affordable price. All the cars were relatively inexpensive and model 101 was one of the cheapest in the world. Vehicles were designed without luxurious decorative elements but still looked elegant. Moreover, they featured a low fuel consumption.
• Good speed characteristics. For example, the 1300 saloon, launched in 1961, could reach 155 km/h. It was one of the fastest in Yugoslavia.
• Sufficient comfort level. Model 10, created in 2006, was equipped with an air-conditioner as standard. Many cars featured a CD-player, electric windscreen heater, power steering as optional extras.
