Car parts TRABANT
Trabant is a make of compact cars which were produced in East Germany from 1957 till 1991 by Sachsenring Karosseriemodule GmbH. Production facilities were located in Zwickau. The factory was sold to Volkswagen AG after company closure in 1991. A total of about 3,000,000 brand cars were assembled. Many of them were sold to Poland, Hungary and other European countries.
Brand cars
The manufacturer offered several passenger cars models in body versions of a saloon, estate car, pickup, convertible. They were the most popular in East Germany at the time and were often used in motorsport. By 1980, sportsmen won 161 gold medals driving Trabant cars.
Advantages of cars of this make
- Low price. Vehicles were comparatively cheap because of inexpensive production materials and equipment.
- Easy maintenance. The cars were made with steel monocoque chassis, had an independent suspension and a body made of duroplast. Simple design provided fast access to components of Trabant cars in case of repair.
- Compactness. Small sizes of these vehicles allowed drivers to manoeuvre easily in tight spaces. For example, the length of the saloon 601 was 3,555 mm, width – 1,505 mm, height – 1,440 mm.
- Spacious cabin and capacious luggage compartment. 4-seat cars were equipped with wide seats and the luggage compartment capacity could reach 1,400 litres.
- Variety of exterior colours. Since 1964, the model 601 was sold in 6 colours: white, grey, green, brown, yellow and blue. The P50 cars could be painted in 2 or 3 colours together.
- Durability and resistance to increased loads. Car bodies resisted corrosion wonderfully due to the use of duroplast in their production. Moreover, this material is characterized by durability and its melting point is over 600 °C, like that of aluminium. An average service life of vehicles was 28 years. In 1960 the P50 coupe successfully passed endurance testing: it covered more than 17,000 km of Scandinavian roads, half of which were dirt roads.
