Faults of the impulse sensor in the ignition system
  • mechanical damage;
  • loss of contact with the sensor;
  • failure of the sensor magnet.
Symptoms of impulse sensor failure
  • hindered engine start;
  • engine shutdown at idle;
  • interruptions in the engine cycle at idling;
  • jerks of the engine at high speeds;
  • reduction in engine power.
Causes of impulse sensor failure
  • impact of extraneous electromagnetic radiation;
  • intense mechanical impact;
  • open or short circuit.
Diagnostics

Check of the impulse sensor in the ignition system is carried out first thing when signs of contactless ignition system malfunction appear.

The most accurate test of the sensor is done with an oscilloscope, but it should be carried out under appropriate conditions. You can also connect a voltmeter to the terminals of the device. The voltage of working pulse sensor will oscillate between the values of 0.4 and 11 V.

Another option to check whether the sensor went wrong is to connect a known good similar part in its place and evaluate the correctness of its work.

The service life of the ignition impulse sensor depends on the conditions of its operation. Most manufacturers set the value within 107 to 108 actuations. Thus, the sensor can serve for the life of the vehicle without mechanical damage or extraneous electromagnetic radiation impact.

Replacing ignition impulse sensor

The impulse sensor cannot be repaired because it is composed of semiconductor compounds that interact in a magnetic field.

Replacing the sensor is problematic because of its location. First you need to remove the distributor cover and rotate the crankshaft. It is necessary that the average mark on the crankshaft coincides with the mark on the valve train.

Then, unscrew the distributor mountings and gently knocking drive out the pin that locks the clutch. Then the clutch mount is unscrewed, after which it is removed. Terminals of the impulse sensor should be disconnected carefully in order not to damage them. After that, all that remains is to unscrew the mounting of the sensor and remove it from the slot.
