Puch AG & Co KG is an Austrian company founded in 1899 in Graz by an engineer and inventor Johann Puch. The manufacturer produced passenger cars, motorcycles, buses, mopeds, bicycles and also spare parts for Puch vehicles and other brand cars. In 1928 the company merged with Austro-Daimler AG, later forming Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG conglomerate. An Italian corporation Piaggio & C. S.p.A., started producing motorcycles in 1990s, and a Swedish concern Volvo Group – buses. Other branches became property of a Canadian car manufacturer Magna International Inc. In 2001 the company was renamed Magna Steyr AG & Co KG, and in 2003 vehicles production stopped.

Cars of the brand

The model range included SUVs, coupes, convertibles. Moreover, amphibious all-terrain vehicles of increased load capacity were produced. They were equipped with hard-topped or soft-topped roof. Wheel arrangement of Pinzgauer ATV which was developed in 1970 could be 4 × 4 or 6 × 6. Also special Puch cars were offered for agricultural industry, for utilities and rescue services. Military vehicles were provided to the armed forces of Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand, Malaysia, Katanga, Congo.

Puch cars advantages

• Compact size and small weight. For example, Haflinger ATV was 3 500 mm long, 1 500 wide. Its weight was about 600 kg.
• High load capacity. Haflinger car could carry up to 500 kg, and Pinzgauer – up to 5 000 kg. Construction of the latter provided even weight distribution and low centre of gravity. Many modifications of Pinzgauer allowed to carry up to 10 people.
• Great off-road performance. The cars were designed for driving in severe conditions. For example, G-Modell and Haflinger cars were equipped with independent suspension and were characterized by high road clearance. Such design had a positive effect on traction qualities and allowed vehicles to easily overcome the most difficult obstacles.
