In 1983 “Motor Trend” and ”Wheels” magazines awarded the model “Import Car of the Year 1983” title, and in 1987 “Auto, Motor und Sport” magazine gave it the first place in comparative test with Audi 80, Peugeot 405, Renault 21 and Ford Sierra. On the Japanese and some other markets the model was called Capella, in Great Britain – Montrose. In Asia, Australia and South Africa the car was sold as Ford Telstar.
History of Mazda 626
The model has five generations and four restyled versions. The first generation was produced from 1978 to 1982 and had the CB index. The cars were offered in sedan and coupe body styles of and on most markets had rear-wheel drive. But Mazda 626 coupe had lower aerodynamic drag coefficient – 0.39, while for the sedan it was 0.42. After model release on the USA market, company sales in this country doubled.
The second generation, GC, was produced from 1982 to 1987. The cars became front-wheel driven. A 5-door hatchback was added to body styles range. Even standard configurations were equipped with electric power windows, central locking, and velour was used for interior trimming.
The third generation was produced from 1987 to 1992 and was indexed as GD. During that period the car became available in another popular body type: an estate car, which got its own index – GV, was added. For this generation a new 4WS system was available, it provided control of all wheels of both axles during maneuvering.
In GE generation, which was released in 1992, coupe body was absent while an estate didn’t undergo changes. In 1995 a restyling was performed. The narrow radiator grille painted in body colour was the most notable feature of renewed cars exterior.
The fifth model generation, GF, came out in April, 1997. The manufacturer renewed an estate car as a part of it. Also, a concept car of Mazda 626 sedan – MPS (Mazda Performance Series) – was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000. The car was supposed to be equipped with 5-speed manual gearbox and 2.5L 280 hp turbocharged engine.
Features of restyled Mazda 626 GF cars
Mazda 626 cars of the fifth generation were renewed in 1999. The car bonnet became longer, mouldings and rearview mirror bodies started to be painted in body colour and reversing lights were moved to the upper part of rear lights. The cars were equipped with Activematic gearbox. Much attention was paid to safety: particularly, cars were equipped with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and dynamic stability control system (DSC).
