Mazda 323 cars were produced since 1977 till 2003. Cars were assembled in Japan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, New Zealand, Mexico, Thailand, China, the Philippines, Iran. The model got different names according to the market where it was sold: Familia and Lantis in Japan, Allegro in Colombia, GLC (Great Little Car) and Protegé in North America. The word “Astina” was added to the model name in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. In Asia, Oceania, South Africa and some countries of Latin America the car was sold as Ford Laser and Ford Meteor. From 1989 to 1994 in Japan it was also produced under other brand – as Eunos 100. In 1980 the model won “Car of the Year Japan” title and also became “Car of the Year” according to popular Australian “Wheels” magazine.

History of Mazda 323 cars

In total, six generations and four restyled versions of the model were presented. The first generation, FA4, was presented in versions of 3- and 5-door hatchbacks and estate car. The cars were equipped with rear-wheel drive. In 1980, production of the second generation, BD, started. Mazda 323 sedan was added to body styles available earlier. These cars were the first after the R130 model with front-wheel drive and led Japanese vehicles sales ratings in Germany.

In 1985 production of the BF generation started. It included front-wheel and all-wheel drive cars with DOHC (Double OverHead Camshaft) turbo-charged engines. Debut of the fourth generation, the BG, happened in 1989. Cars were produced with petrol engines with 128 hp maximum and with 55 hp diesel engine. And in 1993 a special 185 hp turbocharged engine was developed as a part of model homologation for participation in World Rally Championship.

The BA generation (BH in Japan) was unveiled in 1994 at the Paris Motor Show. The generation included by 3- and 5-door hatchbacks and sedan. The model started looking more modern due to the streamlined body. These cars were equipped with airbags for the driver and passenger for the first time in model history.

In 1998 production of 323 BJ in sedan and five-door hatchback variants began. They were front-wheel drive cars with optionally available all-wheel drive. The sedan was used as a service car in police departments, particularly, in Singapore.

In 2000 the restyled sixth generation was presented. Body style range remained the same: Mazda 323 sedan and 5-door hatchback. Car body lines became smoother, the radiator grille became wider and the large company logo was situated in its centre. Headlights got elongated shape with pointed edges. The front bumper had more relief, fog lights were moved beyond its grille, mouldings disappeared from the front and rear bumpers.

Model’s interior also underwent changes. The manufacturer used new materials for cabin trimming, upholstery colour palette was also renewed. Moreover, the cars got modern audio systems and a display integrated into the central console. These cars were notable for a rather spacious luggage compartment. Its volume for hatchback varied between 356 and 1000 litres, for sedan it was 416 litres.
