Replace a Spare part Suspension ball joint – a defective one or if the limit of use has been already reached. Find out useful information about Suspension ball joint

Faults of the ball joint
  • appearance of backlash;
  • wear of components;
  • broken stud of a ball joint;
  • corrosion.
Symptoms of ball joint failure
  • knock in the suspension while riding on a bumpy road (at low speeds);
  • increase of the steering wheel resistance and creaking in the front suspension when turning it;
  • uneven tire wear;
  • instability of the wheels when driving in a straight line;
Causes of the ball joint failure
  • wear of contacting components;
  • riding on roads with poor coating;
  • moisture or abrasive particles ingress;
  • chemical exposure;
  • damage to the protective cover;
  • absence or lack of lubrication in the mechanism.
Diagnostics

First, examine the protective cover. On detection of even small defects it must be replaced.

Then you need to check the part for the presence of backlash. It is better to seek assistance from a service center, where experts carry out diagnostics on a special stand.

If you carry out an inspection on your own, you will need an assistant. The front of the car should be lifted and set on a support. Then press the brake pedal as far as it goes. At the same time, one should shake the wheel, holding it by the upper and lower points. If there is a backlash, the joint will have to be replaced.

Repair of the ball joint

In some vehicles, the ball bearing and the arm are a one-piece construction. In this case, it is more profitable to produce the restoration, not a replacement. For the restoration special equipment is used, so the repair is carried out in a service shop.

Replacement of ball joints

To replace the ball joint in home, you will need a set of spanners, a ball joint puller, a jack, a tire iron and an assistant. You must perform the following steps:

  1. Loosen the wheel and raise the vehicle with the jack.
  2. Unscrew the ball joint stud nut, unscrew the screws, and then disconnect the item from the knuckle.
  3. With the help of a puller press out the stud.
  4. Move the arm aside (the assistant does it using the tire iron), dismantle the old part.
  5. Fasten a new part to the steering knuckle.
  6. Now you can gently release the lever, making sure that the stud is in the eyelet.
  7. Tighten the nut of the ball stud.
