Daihatsu Applause cars were sold from 1989 to 2000. The manufacturer intended to combine advantages of a saloon and hatchback in this model. As the result, unusual car was offered to customers: it looked like a saloon, but was equipped with a full fifth door instead of a luggage compartment lid.
History of Daihatsu Applause cars
The model was presented by one generation with two restyled versions. Presentation of 5-door Daihatsu Applause hatchback took place at Geneva Motor Show in 1989. The car, elegant from outside, had rather spacious luggage compartment thanks to unusual body construction: its volume varied from 412 to 764 liters. Initially, the cars were produced with front-wheel drive, but later, all-wheel drive models appeared; they were available till 1994. In extended packages the cars were equipped with the power steering and power windows.
The first model restyling took place in 1992. As the result the car got double-colour painting of the body and bumper, and a chromed edging appeared around the radiator grille. The second restyling occurred five years later, in 1997.
Features of II restyling of I generation Daihatsu Applause
The renewed model debuted on International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 1997. Applause became longer by 35 mm, reaching 4350 mm length. Width and height remained the same: 1660 mm and 1385 mm correspondingly. The rear lights got new arrangement of optic elements. The manufacturer used large quantity of chromed elements for exterior decoration: headlights and rear lights got shiny frames. The radiator grille became fully chromed and filled with numerous vertical bars.
The model had ventilated disc brakes on the front axle and drum ones on the rear. In standard package the renewed Applause hatchback was equipped with power steering, and extended package included the air-conditioner.
