The History of the Audi A2

This model is represented by one generation, the 8Z. Over more than 5 years of the production, 176,377 cars rolled off the assembly line. Nevertheless, in order to increase the sales, in 2003 the manufacturer started the production of a special series called “colour.storm”. These cars were characterised by brighter colours combined with stylish black elements: roof, body and bumper mouldings. However, the new product launch didn’t result in sales growth.

The low popularity of the car was because of the fact that the Audi A2 cars seemed to be too expensive for their size. Besides, they were ahead of their time as they appeared when economical and ecological issues were not treated with due respect.

In 2011, in Frankfurt am Main, the concept of a new Audi A2 was unveiled, the car with an electric engine. Besides, the developers wanted to produce cars with conventional engines. However, the model never returned.

The Features of the Audi A2

This model is treated as one of the most unusual small engine cars. The car prototype whose design was elaborated by Stefan Sielaff and Luc Donckerwolke was introduced to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in autumn 1997. It was called Al2 and that was, obviously, done to draw the attention to the fact that its body was made of aluminium. The car entered the mass production two years later.

In the history of the company, this car was the second to have an aluminium body. Due to the usage of this material, the car was characterised by a relatively small weight, just 855 kg. The body dimensions are quite modest: the length is 3826 mm, the width is 1673 mm but due to it was 1553 mm high, the Audi A2 hatchback has a spacious cabin. The car is fitted with the ABS and ESP.
