Screw extractors help to carefully remove damaged fasteners, for example, bolts or studs with drive slots broken off. These hand tools are nothing but rods which are placed into the hole drilled in the fastener. They bite into the deformed component and allow to unscrew it.
Screw extractor sets include tools of different sizes and allow to demount any component, large or small. In most cases, aprice of such a set is lower than that of all necessary products bought separately.
Types
By design:
- Spiral fluted. These are threaded cones. They are screwed into the hole drilled in the broken fastener. As a rule, they are used with a tap wrench.
- Straight fluted. They are hammered into the damaged element. For removing them one needs a spanner and significant efforts. The working part is shaped as a cylinder or cone with cutting edges.
Sets differ in the number of items they include: 4, 6, 10 etc. Apart from tools for demounting, manufacturers often include drill bits and guides.
Screw extractor usage tips
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and only use the tool to remove components it is made for.
- Before using the tool, treat the fastener with penetrating oil.
- Mark the centre of the damaged fastener with a centre punch beforehand. Insert the tool exactly in the centre. Otherwise, component removal will be difficult. Moreover, there’s a risk to damage the tool itself.
- Store the set in the case provided by the manufacturer.
