When replacing some car parts one might need to make a thread on a bolt, screw, stud, pipe or other elements. Dies are used for this job. They allow creating external thread manually or with a lathe. These accessories are nuts with sharp edges inside. For manual operation, the tools are placed into a holder with 2 handles for rotation and fastened with screws.
Types of dies
These accessories differ in:
- Diameter. It can be 20, 30, 55, 120 mm, etc.
- Thread pitch. The less it is, the closer the thread coils are.
- Design. The following products can be found in catalogues:
- Solid. They feature high precision and short service life.
- Split. They have a small side hole due to which one can adjust parameters of the threaded part within 0,1 – 0,25 mm. The free play in their design can cause inaccuracies.
- Adjustable. They allow regulating the connection diameter. Special guides – die stocks – are required for work. There are stocks for circular, square or hexagon dies.
- Thread handedness: right- or left-handed. Particularly, the appropriate tool should be used for making a thread on car wheel studs.
When ordering these tools online, take into account that they are made for different measuring systems and can make metric or imperial screw threads. The former are marked with M and used for small components. The latter are marked with G and are used for working on pipes and other large components.
Tips on using dies
- Use the tools only for the intended purpose specified by the manufacturer. The processed part should be secured prior to working.
- Clean the component from soiling including corrosion stains, remains of old paint.
- Place the component precisely at 90° to tool’s cutting edges, otherwise the thread will be offset.
- For each component, use a tool of a corresponding diameter.
- Don’t make too much effort, act smoothly, remove shavings from the working area in time.
- When the work is done, use the tool once more on the ready component.
