Crimpers are needed to make a crimped connection when repairing car electrical wiring. With their help, you can prepare the conductors for the attachment of terminals, and ensure a secure joining of several wires together.
Types of wire crimpers
In the catalogues, two main types of these tools can be found, which differ in design:
- Crimping pliers. They have two jaws with notches that serve as a guide for the wire. Such tools ensure a two-sided compression. They are comfortable to use but can crimp wires of a certain diameter only.
- Ferrule crimping tools. These have a solid head with an opening in it fitted with mandrels. Depending on the type of the aperture, they can compress the material from four or six sides and are automatically adjusted to the diameter of the connector. Due to design peculiarities, it is not always comfortable to work without prior detachment of the cable.
Depending on the intended application, there are tools for:
- End sleeves (wire ferrules). They can have square or trapezoidal slots. Some might be fitted with plastic flanges that make it easier to work with stranded cables.
- Insulated terminals. These are fitted with three oval openings for pressing which are marked with red, blue and yellow colours. They should be used for components with a similar colour indication.
- Non-insulated terminals. The tool presses them in the centre and forms a dividing seam with the help of a special ridge.
Crimpers: usage tips
- Please, observe all safety precautions: do not work with parts that are electrified, use the tools only for the purpose intended and according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Strip the outer jacket from ends of the wires before crimping. Place them in the correct order according to the type of the connector.
- When the work is done, clean the tools removing the bits of the material left.
- Occasionally, check the tool for defects and lubricate its moving parts.
- Keep the instrument in its original pack in a dry, ventilated place at the temperature between −45 °C and +50 °C and at the relative humidity no more than 60-70%.
