Replace a Spare part Cv joint – a defective one or if the limit of use has been already reached. Find out useful information about Cv joint
A constant velocity joint (CV joint for short) of a drive shaft performs the function of continuous transfer of the torque to the driven wheel. It is used in systems of front wheel drive of passenger cars, and less often in rear wheel drive, and also in full drive cars with independent suspension of rear wheels.
5 CV joint operation tips
- Perform visual inspection of a dust boot regularly. Average lifetime of the CV joint is 80,000 – 100,000 operational kilometers. However, damages of the dust boot may significantly shorten this time. It is recommended to replace the boot upon detection of small damages (scratches, abrasions); and in most cases of boot tearing it is recommended to replace the whole CV joint.
- Do not expose CV joints to excessive loads, which may occur during vehicle operation in off-road conditions, wheels slipping, or as a result of increasing of the engine power relatively to the rated one.
- Use only high-quality lubricant.
- For replacement of the dust boot and fastening clamps, use only high quality parts selected from a catalog in accordance with a CV joint type used in your car.
- Try to avoid continuous contact of the CV joint dust boot with water and other liquids.
Defects of CV joints, their causes and signs
- Corrosion or mechanical damages of metal parts of the joint. They occur because of ingress of moisture and dust into the mechanism due to depressurization of dust boot. Screeching, rustling and squeaking heard from the suspension, which become more intensive when cornering, are signs of such a defect.
- Premature wear of the CV joint. Excessive loads to unit cause its lifetime shortening. Wear can manifest itself by vibration and rustle in the suspension during car moving.
- Wear and damages of the dust boot. Appearance of cracks and tears in the protective boot can be the result of car operation in extreme conditions (off-road, abrupt temperature changes, etc.) or usage of knowingly poor-quality materials. This defect can be revealed during visual inspection.
