Alfa Romeo 164 saloon was produced from 1987 till 1998. Assembling took place in Italy and Taiwan. Back in the day this model was the brand’s flagship. The car was sold as the 168 on the markets of Malaysia, Indonesia and some other countries.
History of Alfa Romeo 164 cars
The car is presented by one generation and two restyled versions. Debut of the model took place at International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 1987. The important feature of the 164 saloon was excellent drag coefficient: it was only 0.30. Body length was 4554 mm, width – 1760 mm, height – 1390 mm. Initially all the cars had front-wheel drive, but in 1993 Q4 model with all-wheel drive appeared.
The cars got rather cozy passenger compartment. They were equipped with ergonomic seats with leather or velvet trimming. Additional comfort was provided by armrests of the front seats. Electric adjustment of the seat was available at extra charge.
One of the interior main features of the cabin was ergonomic console, which allowed to easily control the fog lights, air-conditioner and many other elements. The steering wheel of the 164 could be easily adjusted by height and reach. Moreover, the manufacturer took care of high-quality sound-proofing. The car was equipped with three onboard computers. The climate-control was available in extended packages.
The model underwent the first restyling in 1990. During this, car length and height slightly increased: they reached 4557 mm and 1393 mm correspondingly. Width remained the same. Important feature of the renewed car was improved suspension. Another restyling was carried out in 1992. Production of the model ended in 1998, the successor was Alfa Romeo 166.
Features of II restyling of I generation Alfa Romeo 164
Apart from standard car with 4560 mm length, the model Super with enlarged body was produced. Length of such car was 4665 mm. Width and height of all cars were 1760 mm and 1390 mm correspondingly.
Alfa Romeo 164 cars got more modern and elegant appearance. The car front part was decorated with the narrow headlights. Stylish chromed elements were situated along the body. The triangle, framing the radiator grille, dispersed the sweeping lines on the bonnet lid, which added the car special appeal.
The manufacturer improved construction of the body, thanks to which it became more reliable. The cars, designated for sales in Europe, started to be equipped with the driver airbag. And the passenger airbag was added in 1994.
