Moreover, in 1998 it became “Car of the Year” in Denmark, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Croatia and Luxembourg, and in 1999 ‒ in South Africa.

History of Alfa Romeo 156

In total, there was one generation (the 932) and two restyled versions of this model. Debut of the model in saloon version took place at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 1997. Three years later, the manufacturer also offered a 5-door 156 estate car, called Sportwagon. Famous Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones took part in the advertising campaign of the vehicle.

The model was equipped with gasoline engines with max output of 190 hp and diesel engines with Common-Rail injection system outputting up to 136 hp. In 2001 the engines were upgraded to comply with Euro 3 standards. Sports versions of these cars participated in many championships. Particularly, in 2000 and 2002 Fabrizio Giovanardi won European Touring Car Championship in one of those cars.

The first restyling was performed in 2002. Outer mirrors and protective bumper covers became painted in body colour; while the fog lights got bigger. Xenon headlights were optionally available. The trip computer with multifunctional display was built into the dashboard; Bose stereo-system with control buttons on the steering wheel and dual-zone climate-control were offered optionally.

The standard equipment of Alfa Romeo 156 included the stability control programme, emergency brake assist and anti-slip regulation. In 2002 the company has offered a special sports modification of the car, the GTA, equipped with 250 hp engine. Gabriele Tarquini took the first place in European Touring Car Championship 2003 behind the wheel of that car.

Features of Alfa Romeo 156 (type 932) cars, second restyling

The manufacturer presented the second restyling in 2003. Giorgetto Giugiaro, owner of “Car Designer of Century” title, supervised the car’s revamp. Exterior of the car was austere and elegant. Mesh in the radiator grille was replaced with horizontal chromed bars, the headlights got skewed edges, and the front and rear bumpers lost moldings.

In 2004 the all-wheel drive Alfa Romeo 156 crossover was added to the saloon and 5-door estate, manufactured before. It was presented at the Geneva Motor Show and got the Crosswagon name. The car was equipped with traction control system as standard.

Magnesium-containing elements were used in interior decoration of the model: the central part of the steering wheel, front seat frames, dashboard support. These cars had a spacious luggage compartment: 378 litres for the saloon, up to 1180 litres with folded rear seats ‒ for the estate and crossover.
