Before sawing or drilling a workpiece, it must be securely fixed. For this purpose, vice clamps are used. These are tools with two jaws, between which the target material is placed. One of them is fixed and the other moves back and forth using a threaded screw.
Types of vice clamps
By the design:
- Engineer’s. They are fitted with flat jaws with the width varying in the range between 60 and 200 mm, as a rule. Might have a swivel base which makes it possible to fix the workpiece in the required plane and at the required angle.
- Pipe. The jaws have recesses which help to fix pieces of cylindrical shape more securely.

- Hand-held. These are characterised by a light weight, do not need fixation, are suitable for small work-pieces, can be placed in different planes. The disadvantage is inability for large items fixation.
- Machine. They have large working parts and robust construction, weigh a lot. As a rule, they are placed on a workbench and are often used together with a drilling machine. Can clamp large pieces, it is comfortable to use it, as the user’s hands remain free.
Vice clamps: maintenance tips
- It is recommended to clean the tool with a brush. You shouldn’t use compressed air as particles of the material can get into your eyes.
- It is necessary to lubricate the threaded screw with motor oil regularly, in order to protect them from corrosion.
- When the work is finished, you should thread out the jaw gradually, in order to prevent the falling of the workpiece down.
- When the tool is being stored, open the jaws as wide as possible. This will reduce the strain in the threaded screw.
