Utility knives are hand cutting tools with replaceable and retractable blades. The tools do not require sharpening: the blunted part is broken off along specially provided marks. These tools may be used for removing insulation from electric wires, adjusting the size of a rubber mat, dismantle a leather or plastic element of the car interior trim, and much more.
Types of utility knives
By the material of the handle:
- Plastic. Lightweight, of a low price, not durable.
- Metal. Resistant to mechanical damage, allow working even with very dense materials.
By the shape of the handle, there are straight and curved knives. Depending on the type of design, the size of the cutting part, and the method of using, the products are classified as:
- Household. Most often, they have a plastic sliding lock for holding the blade. The width of the latter is 9 mm. This structure is not very strong but allows working with materials like thin faux leather. These knives are usually inexpensive.
- Professional. The cutting blade 18 or 25 mm wide is fixed with a metal screw with a clamping plate. These devices are reliable and durable. They can be used to cut dense material, e.g., plastic. Usually, these tools have handles with rubber inserts that prevent slipping in the use.
Tips on using utility knives
- To protract the cutting element, loosen the retainer. One or two sections are enough for working.
- Cut carefully, applying slight pressure to the knife. If necessary, use a ruler.
- Do not break the cutting fragment with hands, use a removable cover attached to the end of the device, or pliers. Bend the element of the blade away from you.
- After working, retract the working blade into the housing.
