Bits are detachable parts of screw guns, screwdrivers, angle screwdrivers which are used for screwing and unscrewing threaded joints. They vary by size, diameter and shape of section. They allow to use the same tool to assemble and disassemble many different fastenings.
Types of bits
Depending on a screw drive type, they can be:
- Slot. Labelled as SL. They are the most common.
- Phillips. Labelled as PH. They are more effective in comparison with flat heads as they have a bigger area of contact with a screw surface.
- Pozidriv. This type of bits is labelled as PZ. They have better engagement with a screw head. They are also suitable for high torques.
- Hexagonal. Also known as Hex. They are often used in the joints that require a large force applied to be dismantled. They have a large area of the working surface. The risk of cam out is minimal.
- Hexalobular or Torx. Labelled with the letters “TX”, “Tr” or “T”. They may have an internal socket, rounded or sharp edges. They have been designed not to cam out.
According to the materials used, there are:
- Alloy steel. Among them, there are:
- Chrome-vanadium. They are resistant to the high-temperature exposure.
- Chrome-nickel. They show high resistance to corrosion and impact of aggressive chemicals.
- Chrome-Molybdenum. They have a small weight and are resistant to oxidation and deformations.
- Non-alloy steel. Have a very hard surface. They are less frequent.
Depending on the type of the coating:
- Non-coated. They are made of corrosion-resistant steel, have balanced characteristics and an affordable price.
- Zinc coating. They do not break down when exposed to moisture and aggressive chemicals.
- Nickel-chromium coating. They are more resistant to corrosion and mechanical damage.
- Titanium coating. They are distinguished by extremely high durability but are expensive.
- Tungsten coating. They arecharacterised by a high wear-resistance and withstand the impact of the aggressive environment well.
- Diamond coating. Provide a secure engagement between the tool and the head of the fastener, prevent slipping.
Maintenance tips
- It’s better to buy bits in a set, so you will always have all the necessary tools around.
- Working in hard-to-reach places, use magnetic tips. They help to attach the fastener better as you start screwing.
- Never use the bits that do not fit even if they look similar. Otherwise, you can not only damage the tool but also tear off the edges of the fastener head.
- Always use bits made of hard metals to screw in heat-treated screws. They wear out less.
- While tightening and loosening fasteners, press the tool against their surface as hard as possible. This will help to prevent slipping.
