RENAULT ESPACE reviews and experiences
The MPV Renault Espace was introduced to the public in 1984 and is still being produced. At different times, these vehicles were assembled at the plants in Douai, Sandouville and Romorantin-Lanthenay in France as well as in Xiaogan, China. In 2015, the model was honoured with the Best Car award according to the results of the readers’ poll carried out by the French magazine L’Automobile. The vehicle was named as the Taxi of the Year 2015-2016 according to the L'Officiel du Taxi magazine and also received the Monospace de l'année 2016 award from an independent analytical company Argus.
The History of the Renault Espace vehicles
Overall, there are five generations and three updated version of the model. During the first month after the J11 generation was unveiled, only nine cars were sold. However, soon this car became very popular: its ability to transport up to seven passengers with comfort going at a speed up to 180 kph was duly appreciated. In 2004, the famous TV show Top Gear organised a race, in which popular MPVs of that time took place. The Renault Espace was the first one to finish the race.
In 1991, the J63 generation was introduced. The car started to look more modern due to sleek lines and unusual side mirrors. The manufacturer presented a special sports version of the model, the F1. It was created in particular to take part in the Formula-1 races. You can also see this vehicle in the racing game Gran Turismo 2 for the Sony PlayStation.
The JE0 generation entered mass production in 1996. The prominent feature of these vehicles was fibreglass used to make some elements of the body which allowed to reduce the risk of corrosion. Like its predecessors, this model had a galvanised steel framework used as a load-bearing structure. In 1997, Grand Espace, the long-wheelbase version debuted at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. The body had the same width (1810 mm) and height (1690 mm) as a standard version but it was 270 mm longer and its length was 4787 mm.
In 2002, the manufacturer started to produce the J81 generation. This vehicle was the first MPV that received a five-star rating at the Euro-NCAP crash test. There was also a version with a 245 hp engine that could accelerate up to 225 kph.
Features of the Renault Espace vehicles (the JR)
At the 2014 Paris Motor Show the fifth generation of the model, the JR was introduced. The vehicles were made in the minivan body style with a five-seat version available. Its dimensions increased greatly: its length is 4857 mm and its width is 1888 mm. A moderate height (1677 mm) highlights the sporty and dynamic appearance of the model.
The vehicle is characterised by long narrow headlights and wide radiator grille made from a great number of thin, horizontal bars. The bumper grille is emphasised by massive chrome elements with large fog light housings on its sides. There is a panoramic roof available as an option which forms a single unit with the wide windscreen of the vehicle.
The Espace minivan is characterised by an ultra-modern interior. The dashboard has a minimalist design. There are almost no buttons on it as most of it is occupied with an R-Link 2 multimedia touchscreen. A curved top of the gear stick looks very unusual. Seats are fitted with headrests and side bolsters.
The manufacturer offers the Multi-Sense system as standard equipment in extended packages. With its help, you can adjust the suspension, wheel steering, gearbox and also create the right atmosphere in the passenger compartment by setting the light intensity, climate control and others.
As for the safety systems, the top trim includes the ABS, emergency braking system, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitor and many others. Moreover, you can also equip your car with a speed limit warning system and automatic headlight switch.
