Coolant is a service fluid of the car cooling system. It is used for removing heat from engine parts. It doesn’t freeze at low ambient temperatures. The water pump is responsible for fluid circulation, the radiator and fan – for cooling it.

You need to regularly check whether the expansion tank is filled correctly and top it up as necessary. Insufficient amount of the fluid risks its boiling and engine overheating.
Tighten the cylinder head bolts from time to time, about every 4,000–5,000 kilometres. Also be sure to replace the cylinder head gasket at the first symptoms of damage or after every repair that involved removing the cylinder head. Otherwise, due to improper sealing of the joint between the engine block and cylinder head, gases can get into the cooling system, where they can destruct its elements and impair the properties of the service fluid.
The working lifespan of antifreeze is determined by the vehicle manufacturer and stated in its technical specification. For many modern models it is prescribed to replace the coolant every 5 years or 250,000 kilometres.
Never mix fluids of different colours. They have different contents and may contain incompatible components, which leads to change of operating properties of the product and destruction of seals.
When replacing the fluid, it is advisable to flush the cooling system, otherwise, the settled dirt will remain inside.
Be careful when using additives. For instance, a stop leak additive for the radiator will do as a temporary measure, when you are in urgent need to stop a leak. But too frequent use of it leads to contamination of the coolant and clogging of the system.
Problems with antifreeze, their causes and symptoms
Contamination. Wear products of the water pump, particles of destructed sealing elements and rust heavily contaminate the coolant. In particular, oxidation processes are accelerated by the use of incompatible elements in the system: for example, those made of copper and aluminium. The defect is indicated by coolant turbidity and changing of its colour to brownish.
Viscosity changing. In some cases, when looking inside the expansion tank, you can notice that the fluid became very dense or gel-like. Typically, it is caused by mixing of incompatible products.
Low viscosity. As a rule, it is caused by improper dilution of a coolant concentrate with water. For instance, if you pour just 30% of antifreeze and 70% of water into the system, this mixture will freeze already at -15˚С, and as a result, the cooling system will stop working. You can suspect the failure if the temperature of the engine is rising when you start it in the freezing cold weather.
