Light truck tyres structure

Tires for light commercial vehicles are a separate class of tyres for car with the increased strength and resistance to big loadings. Trucks with a general equipped weight up to 3,5 tons and passenger cars with 16 seats belong to light commercial vehicles.

  • Cover ply — synthetic rubber tread. It ensures grip and manoeuvrability of the vehicle.
  • Tire belt — protective belt. It is a multilayer structure from cord plies that are angled to the tire casing. It ensures durability and protection from damages.
  • Cord made of polyester. It prevents deformation of a tire at high speed, braking and maneuvering.
  • Rubber compound tread. It pressurizes and keeps pressure in tubeless tyres.
  • Bead core. It ensures firm tire seating on the rim.
  • Steel cord plies. They strengthen and stabilize the connection of cord and sidewall.
  • Sidewall. It protects tire from the external mechanical damage.

Light commercial vehicle tires types

According to the cord structure:

  • R —radial;
  • D — diagonal;
  • B — bias belt.

With or without tube:

  • With inner tube.
  • Tubeless.

Temperature stability index:

  • A — maximal level of temperature resistance to the generation of heat. It is a specific feature of summer auto tyres.
  • B — medium level of temperature resistance to the generation of heat. All-season tires are specified with this mark.
  • C — minimal level of temperature resistance to the generation of heat. It is used for winter vehicle tyres.

How to choose light commercial vehicle tyres

Here there are some pieces of advice for choosing light commercial vehicle tires:

  1. It is forbidden to use passenger vehicle tyres for a light commercial vehicle. It is caused by the increased loading level (to 1,5 tons on one wheel) and special service conditions of commercial transport.
  2. Tires with radial cord plies used for light commercial vehicles are more preferable at operation on a hard asphalt road. They differ in longer life cycle and bigger resistance to mechanical damages. And auto tires with a diagonal cord arrangement have greater performance on uneven and stony roads.
  3. Tires for commercial transport have to be marked by the Latin letter "C" (Commercial). Look for this marker after designation of rim diameter.
  4. Buy car tyres taking into account climatic conditions of the region in which transport will be used.

Hints for operation of automobile tyres for light commercial vehicles

  • It is necessary to change summer tyres to winter ones when the temperature is low than +7 °C or there is a fall of snow.
  • It is better to install summer and winter vehicle tires on different rims and to change wheels entirely when seasons change. It will allow to protect disks from possible mechanical damages at each procedure of tire replacement.
  • It is better to store tyres with rims. Tires have to be inflated in half, to 1 bar of pressure. Storage conditions: the dry and ventilated room, temperature within 15–25 °C. Suspend wheels for rims or store a pile up to 4 pieces. In this case it is necessary to interchange the position of wheels in a pile once a month.
  • It is recommended to store auto tires without rims vertically, monthly rotating. It is not recommended to hang them and store in a pile.
  • During a seasonal change of tyres mark a wheel according to the part and shaft of installation.
  • Control tire pressure taking into account the recommendations in the car manual.
  • Pressure in a spare wheel has to exceed the maximal indicator by 0,3 bars.

How to define that it is time to change light commercial vehicle tires

  • Check the expiration date. Usually it makes 5–6 years. Look for a date of production on a sidewall - it is 3 or 4 small figures. Existence of 3 figures will mean a year of production till 2000. After 2000 the rubber is marked by 4 figures where the first two figures designate a week, and the last — year of production. For example, figures "1115" will mean date of issue - the 11th week of 2015.
  • Watch tread condition: it will help not only to determine a necessity of tire replacement by wear indicators in time, but also to notice foreign objects which can get stuck in grooves.
  • Tread height can be checked by means of special tools or a usual coin, of 2 euros. If the rim of a coin is visible from tread, tire replacement is necessary.
  • Small cracks and peels on a tire sidewall demonstrate rubber aging and is the sign that it’s time to replace tyres for car.
  • The whistling sound produced by tires at turning maneuvers indicates the high level of tread wear.
