Sealing elements of crankshafts, camshafts, or engine valves are subject to heavy wear-out, and require regular replacement. For this purpose, a seal puller is used. Attempts to remove seals with the use of the means at hand or other tools may result in damages to important and costly car components.
Types of seal pullers
- Multi-purpose. They are suitable for removing seals in many units. The working part consists of one or two hooks. They work as levers: they are inserted under the seal to pick it up, after which the component is easily removed.
- Specialized. They are intended for dismantling components located in certain systems of the vehicle. There are tools for removing the following seals:
- Valve stem seals of the engine. These tools are similar to pliers. Their working surface is made in the form of plates with notches on the inner side. They are driven by pressing the handles. For deeply set valves, there are pullers with elongated round working part and locking arm. This design allows to clasp the seal most tightly.
- Crankshaft and camshaft. They are fitted with a hook that picks up the component, and a pusher that allows to carefully remove it.
- Steering rod hydraulic cylinder. The elements of the tip move to sides, grasp the seal, and clamp it during turning out.
Most models are suitable for all vehicles. However, there are products for repairing cars of certain brands.
Tips on using seal pullers
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety measures. In particular, when removing the seals from the engine, the engine should be stopped and the negative battery terminal should be disconnected.
- Work very carefully in order not to damage mounting seat of the component.
- After its operation, clean traces of the lubricant from the puller.
- Keep the tool in a dry place.
