Power screwdrivers are used for screwing and unscrewing threaded fasteners: pins, screws, self-tapping screws etc. These tools work as a wrench, but the work is done faster due to the drive mechanism. It quickly rotates the chuck with the bit clamped in it.
Types of power screwdrivers
By the type of drive:
- Pneumatic. These are compact items that function at the expense of compressed air, supplied by an air compressor. These are reliable, durable, but not very powerful tools.
- Electric. They can be mains or battery powered. Mains operated tools are more powerful and allow to do a considerable amount of work. Prices for such instruments are usually lower than for battery-powered. The disadvantages are their heavy weight and the cord, that prevents you from working in hard-to-reach places. Battery tools are characterised by compactness and mobility.
By the design, these tools are divided into straight and angular. The first group has the rotational axis of the chuck being parallel to the direction of the motor movement. The second one has these axes perpendicular. The maximum torque of the angular types is 10–20 times less. However, some threaded joints located in a limited space can be disassembled only with the help of these tools.
Power screwdrivers: maintenance tips
- You should use the tools only for the purpose intended according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Press the start button only when the moving part of the tool is pressed against a screw or self-tapping screw. Do not push on the body.
- Check the equipment for any defects. You should timely replace the worn-out bits.
- Prevent from getting inside the tool any moisture or dirt. Keep the instrument in a dry place, away from direct sunlight.
- If the equipment gets dirty, clean it with a damp cloth. Occasionally, lubricate the chuck.
