Machinist’s hammers are hand tools which are used in repair works involving hammering. Particularly, they are required for mounting or demounting some fastening elements, as well as in the process of cutting, flattening, bending and other kinds of metal treatment. One face of the tool working part is slightly pointed, the other one – flat.

Types of machinist’s hammers

The tools differ from one another by the following main parameters:

  • Head shape:
    • Square. They are the most widespread, are of a simple structure.
    • Round. They are convenient when making blows at different angles, because they leave almost no dents on the processed surface.
  • Material. As a rule, the working part is made of durable tool carbon or chrome-vanadium steel which is not apt to deformation, chips and cracks. Handles are made of wood, plastics, glass fibre, metal or other materials.
  • Head coating type. It can be of zinc, phosphate, chrome, cadmium or other.
  • Handle length. In most cases it varies from 200 to 450 mm.
  • Weight. It can be 200, 300, 600, 800 g, etc. This parameter determines the weight of blow and the speed you can work with.

Tips on machinist’s hammers use

  1. Before using the tool, inspect it for damages: head misalignment or deformation, cracks or chips on the handle, and others. Work only with the operable tool.
  2. Reliably hold the tool in your hand. Its accidental falling can lead to injury. When demounting components, put on special goggles for eyes protection from shatters.
  3. If necessary, after finishing works, clean the tool with a dry cloth without using chemical agents. Store it in a room with low humidity level.
