SAAB 99 parts: find out more!
Saab 99 vehicles were manufactured from 1968 to 1984 in Sweden, Finland and Belgium. The editors of the American magazine “Popular Mechanics” listed the Turbo version among the best cars with turbocharged engines. By the way, earlier that technology was more common in sports cars rather than in urban ones.
The history of Saab 99
The development of the model started in 1965 when the manufacturer decided to produce spacious vehicles for big families. The new model became the most prominent project created by the Swedish designer Sixten Sason. It was unveiled in 1967 in Stockholm at the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology. The first cars were delivered to customers next autumn.
The car had only one generation which underwent slight changes from time to time. For example, in 1972 it got a heated driver’s seat. The same year, they released the sports version EMS with alloy wheels and a stiffer suspension.
In 1974, the manufacturer started to use reinforced bumpers and to equip seats with an additional safety element to protect the neck. The GLi version of 1981 was fitted with power wing mirrors. In 1983, the manufacturer began to use asbestos-free brake pads. A year later, an electronic ignition system was introduced.
The features of Saab 99
They offered a saloon and a three-door hatchback. Besides, starting from 1977, limousines were also available on the Finnish market.
The exterior featured a convex windscreen that provided good visibility. Vehicles with rectangular headlights were sold on European markets, with round ones - in America.
Another peculiarity of the design, which was later used in other models of the brand, was the position of the ignition switch between the front seats. That technical solution reduced the risk of knee injuries in drivers in case of car accidents.
