SAAB 96 parts: find out more!
The Saab 96 coupe was manufactured between 1960 and 1980. The production was carried out at the plants in Sweden, Finland and Belgium. These cars were often used by racers to take part in competitions. For example, in this model, the Swedish sportsman Erik Carlsson won the RAC Rally in 1960–1962 and the Monte Carlo Rally in 1962 and 1963.
The history of Saab 96
The model had one generation and three facelifts. It had much in common with its predecessor, model 93. The Swedish designer Sixten Sason developed the exterior of the new coupe. The car was unveiled on February 17, 1960. It featured a streamlined body, round headlamps and a trapezoidal radiator grille. The decoration involved many chrome elements.
Apart from other things, the new car differed from its predecessor by a more roomy luggage compartment and spacious cabin. A unique feature of the transmission was a freewheel. It allowed shifting gears without pressing the clutch pedal.
In 1962, they started to install seat belts as standard equipment. A year later the ventilation system was updated. The last car was made in the spring of 1980. It was sent to the brand museum in the Swedish city of Trollhättan.
The features of Saab 96 (I generation, facelifts)
Among the changes made during the facelift of 1965 was a new horizontal radiator grille which enclosed the headlights. A year later the list of standard equipment was completed with a four-speed manual transmission instead of the traditional three-speed one. As a result of the facelift of 1969, the car got rectangular headlamps. The radiator grille was decorated with a chrome frame. In 1978, the facelifted car was released. It was easily recognizable, for example, by a small spoiler in the rear end of the vehicle.
