The Saab 900 vehicles were produced from 1979 until 1998 in Sweden and Finland. In 1994, the car was awarded as the “Design of the Year” by the American magazine “Automobile”. In 1998, editors of the American Kiplinger's Personal Finance periodical chose the S Turbo version as the best in its price segment. This car was one of the most popular vehicles produced by the brand.
The history of Saab 900
The model had two generations and one facelift. At first, the manufacturer offered three- and five-door hatchbacks to the public. Starting in 1986, they began manufacturing convertibles that became popular on the US market very quickly. Saloons and coupes were offered as well. The cars had rectangular headlamps, trapezoidal radiator grille and massive bumpers.
The features of Saab 900 (II generation)
The second generation of the model was manufactured between 1993 and 1998. Convertibles, coupes, three- and five-door hatchbacks were now available. The new version featured smoother outlines of the headlamps and bumpers. The ignition switch was located between the front seats.
Some trim levels were equipped with a brand screen which displayed the data about the performance of main car units. Thanks to it the driver could get real-time information about the ambient temperature or fuel efficiency, for instance. The list of additional equipment included a digital odometer.
The manufacturer implemented the Black Panel system. This function allowed to switch off the lighting of most dashboard instruments by pressing a single button. This helped the drivers to get distracted less, especially when driving at night-time. If necessary, the dimmed instruments could light up again, for example, when the fuel level became critically low, etc.
