If you enjoy travelling during winter or cold weather, it is important to stay warm and cosy. The Webasto diesel heater is designed to provide warmth and comfort in vehicles. It is typically used in motorhomes, caravans, camper vans, and other recreational vehicles, as well as in some cars and commercial vehicles. In this article, we will take a closer look at this useful component, and its operation, and offer some troubleshooting tips.

Webasto heater installation

Webasto heater installation

You can find many installation tutorials online. If you don’t feel confident about doing this yourself, you should have your diesel heater installed by a professional as they have the specialist knowledge and experience to ensure that the component is installed correctly, safely, and efficiently. What's more, when professionally installed, warranties often remain valid, protecting your investment, and providing peace of mind.

How to use a Webasto diesel heater

The heater is highly intuitive, with a large LCD screen and a single rotary knob on the outside of the controller, allowing users to easily adjust the temperature in their vehicle

Here are the basic instructions for using your heater:

  • Turn the controller on by pressing the on/off button.
  • Adjust the temperature by turning the knob to the right to increase and to the left to decrease. Each click represents one degree. When you've reached the desired temperature, press the lower button followed by the Webasto button at the top to confirm. The unit is now activated and the status indicator lights turn red.
  • When not in heat mode, access the menu by pressing the selection button at the bottom. This gives access to the mode, language, temperature unit and options control. Under 'Mode', toggle between heating and fan mode. In fan mode, the status indicator lights are blue.
  • Under "Options" you can control the heat time, low voltage cut-off, password protection, preventive maintenance reminders, time and date, temperature offset and default settings.
  • To set a timer, select "Timer" from the menu, select "Edit", and set the day, time and run time. The settings are saved each time the Select button is pressed.

If a fault occurs, you can access the last five fault codes, night heater fault codes, and associated data via the menu system. For further troubleshooting, you can use the Webasto application on your mobile phone to read fault codes and potentially resolve problems. It's important to note, however, that fault codes cannot be reset directly from the device; a dealer diagnostic tool is required to reset and clear the codes.

Vital components that keep your vehicle and heater running smoothly:

  • Car battery: The heater doesn't draw power directly from the battery, but its heat distribution fans do. It is therefore important to have a well-charged, functioning car battery.
  • Fuses: Fuses protect the electrical circuits of the Webasto diesel heater from overcurrent situations. Properly sized and installed new car fuses are essential to ensure the safety and longevity of the heating system.
  • Glow plugs: They preheat the combustion chamber to facilitate the ignition of the diesel fuel when the heater starts. Car glow plugs help to ensure reliable combustion, especially in cold conditions where you also need a heater.
