7.9/10

Volvo 240 is an iconic model, which was produced since 1974 till 1993. Assembling was performed in Sweden, Belgium, Australia, Canada, Malaysia. In 1976 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration claimed the model to be an example to follow when developing safety standards of import passenger cars. In 1991 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety proclaimed this car the safest on the American market.

History of Volvo 240 cars

The model had one generation and two restylings. The cars, which came off the conveyor in 1974, were equipped with rear-wheel drive, MacPherson struts for the front suspension. The cars were released in versions of a coupe, saloon and 5-door estate. In Europe, the most demanded one was Volvo 240 estate. Particularly, that was due to its capacity. There was plenty of space for baby strollers and camping accessories.

The car was restyled in 1977 for the first time. Round headlights were replaced with rectangular ones. Headlights and radiator grille were surrounded be chromed frames. Since 1977, for some countries the manufacturer offered sportive modification GT with 2.1 litres and 123 hp petrol engine. Visually, it was easily recognizable by rectangular fog lights, mounted on the radiator grille between round headlights.

The car appeared in “We were at least lucky with the weather” (“Vi hade i alla fall tur med vädret”) Swedish movie in 1980. Moreover, the model was used in motorsport. For instance, in 1983, the car took part in European Touring Car Championship. Only estate and saloon versions of 240 were produced since 1984. And the last copy of the model was manufactured on the 5th of May, 1993.

Features of II restyling I generation Volvo 240

The second restyling of the model was presented on Paris Motor Show in 1980. The manufacturer started to use less chromed elements in decoration of the front part of Volvo 240 cars, and the rear lights became larger. Modification 244 Turbo with 155 hp engine was produced in 1981. In various configurations these cars were equipped with the roof hatch, air-conditioner, heated driver’s seat and other options, luxurious for the beginning of 80’s. Leather interior trimming, power side mirrors, central locking and cruise control could be ordered for extra charge.
