The Smart Forfour are five-door hatchbacks that have been manufactured since 2004. These are the first vehicles of the brand that have a second row of seats. Earlier, the assembly was carried out in the Netherlands but today it is performed in Slovenia.
The history of Smart Forfour
There are two generations of these cars. The first one, the W454, was mainly sold in Europe. The model had dual oval headlamps, trapezoidal grille with a horizontal bar in the middle, sculptured bonnet with two narrow air intakes.
These vehicles were compact and agile: their length was 3,752 mm, width was 1,684 mm, and height was 1,450 mm. They weighed under 1200 kg and had the engine in front.
Despite their compact size, these cars had a quite spacious luggage compartment. Its capacity could increase from 268 to 910 l because the second row of seats could be moved forward by 150 mm and folded. The base trim level offered ABS and electronic stability system. The production of the W454 was discontinued in 2006.
The features of Smart Forfour (the W453)
The second generation, the W453, was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2014. It got diamond-shaped headlamps with lines of LED daytime running lights, a large radiator grille with a honeycomb design and almost square rear light clusters. The cars became 257 mm shorter, 44 mm narrower and 100 mm higher.
Now, the engine is placed in the back of the vehicle. The manufacturer has provided several airbags, front, side and knee ones, and started using the Crosswind Assist technology to stabilize the car body when the side wind is very strong.
