The Smart Cabrio convertibles were built in 2000–2004. The assembly of the vehicles was carried out in the French city of Hambach.
The history of Smart Cabrio
The vehicle has one generation, the W450. The manufacturer used the steel protective shell Tridon that absorbed the impact in case of collision with another vehicle. Car body parts were plastic panels which the owner could easily replace, for example, to install doors of a different colour.
They used fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines. For example, there were diesel power units with the displacement of up to 0.8 l with direct fuel injection.
The cars were fitted with two front airbags and a telescopic steering column that collapsed in case of a collision. The fuel tank was at the bottom, under the boot. This reduced the risk of combustion during rear-end collisions.
The features of Smart Cabrio (the W450)
Rounded elements prevailed in the exterior, for example, the headlamps looked like two intersecting ovals and the radiator grille was ellipsoid. The door handles were built into the pillars and were placed vertically. The soft top was made of fabric, and the electric drive folded it compactly at the back. Moreover, all roof bars, including the rails along which the top moved, could be manually disassembled and stored into the luggage compartment.
The car was very compact: its length was only 2,500 mm, the width was 1,510 mm, the height was 1,500 mm. Despite the small body, the windscreen was quite wide and provided good visibility. Higher trim levels included an air conditioning system and multimedia system with a CD-changer.
