High beam headlight bulbs: operation features
High beam headlight bulbs are the most important elements of automotive lighting which help drivers to find their way at night time. Unlike low beam headlights, they illuminate a large area of the road. Their light is radiated as a powerful beam which is parallel to the road surface.
Tips on how to choose, use and replace them
- The service life of an ordinary incandescent bulb is, on average, 300-400 hours, of halogen-type ones – 450–1,500 hours, xenon - about 2000 hours, LED bulbs – up to 5,000 hours.
- Do not equip your car with high beam headlight bulbs of a higher wattage. It is prohibited by law and might cause damage to the headlight cluster. If you find that the headlights of your car do not produce enough light, you can use products with higher luminous efficiency. In their descriptions, you may often come across the marks +30%, +50%, +60% .
- It is not allowed to use xenon bulbs instead of halogen or conventional incandescent ones. Their specifications aren’t the same, so if you install gas-discharge devices, you’ll dazzle oncoming drivers, due to incorrect light distribution. Nowadays, commercially available are xenon bulbs with the H7R base which are technically suitable to be installed into ordinary reflector-type headlights as the surface of their shells is covered with special paint in particular places in order to avoid optical aberration and ensure precise directing of the luminous flux. However, before mounting them make sure that these parts have all the necessary certificates and licences.
- Replace the bulbs in pairs. This way you’ll be able to ensure uniform lighting as most of the products lose their light intensity or change colour in the course of time.
- If your vehicle is equipped with xenon lamps, always make sure that the headlight washers and beam adjusters function properly. This is an indispensable condition for providing the best visibility and high level of road safety.
Malfunctions of high beam headlight bulbs, their causes and symptoms
- Filament burnout. This is typical for conventional and halogen incandescent bulbs. This happens due to natural ageing of the filament, strong vibrations, or poor quality of the part. In that case, the lamp doesn’t work.
- Diode burnout. This is a result of voltage surges which happen, for example, when starting the engine with the headlights or parking lights on. This leads to the loss of the light intensity.
- Breaks in the electrical circuit. They might be caused by terminal oxidation, voltage surges in the onboard electrical system, too powerful lighting equipment installed. The symptoms are: blinking, flickering headlights or absence of light with the devices switched on.
- Mechanical damage. It can be discovered during examination. This may be the result of a strong impact, for example, due to a collision or careless parking, or be caused by stones flying out from under the wheels when the vehicle is moving.
