Jump starters are designed for emergency engine start when the battery is dead. They are connected to battery terminals with the help of special cables and compensate for the lack of the battery charge.
Types of jump starters
By area of application:
- Portable ones (power banks) with a built-in lithium battery. Inexpensive. They might be used as a charger for devices. Thanks to their small size, it is convenient to keep them in a car, however, they must not be left in the freezing cold as they might discharge.
- Power stations. Powered either by mains or a battery. Expensive and powerful but bulky and heavy. Designed to be used in garages. Often fitted with a car battery charger function.
By the rated voltage of the battery to be charged:
- 6 V. For motorbikes.
- 12 V. For passenger cars.
- 24 V. For trucks.
Apart from that, they differ by the built-in battery capacity, peak amps and cranking amps, additional options. For instance, some of the devices are fitted with a LED flashlight.
Operating instructions for car jump starters
- Prevent moisture and electrolyte from getting onto the device.
- Always unplug the mains cable every time you move the equipment.
- Do not use the device to start an engine with a broken starter motor. Do not connect it to any broken mobile devices.
- To prevent the occurrence of sparks and current losses, clean the battery terminals before attaching a battery booster to them.
- Do not connect any other devices to the outputs intended for starting an engine. That might lead to the built-in battery getting overcharged and damaged.
- You must always connect jumper cables first to the car battery terminals and only after that to the corresponding connector of the jump starter. The clips of the dangling wires might get in contact which will lead to a short circuit and breakdown.
- Do not leave the jumper cable connector in the socket of the battery booster for more than 30 seconds after the engine has been started. This will prevent the lithium battery from being overcharged.
- Do not start the engine if your jump starter is less than half charged.
