How often do you need to replace wheel hub bearings on a Ford Focus?

The service life of the car part is approximately 70,000 - 80,000 km. This parameter largely depends on its quality and proper installation.

Why do these components fail?

The reasons for premature failure include:

  • deterioration of the seal;
  • driving at high speeds and aggressive driving style;
  • water ingress;
  • incorrect installation;
  • poor quality of the element;
  • mechanical damage as a result of a collision or running over an obstacle.

How do I know that wheel hub bearings on my Ford Focus are faulty?

Signs of faulty components:

  • humming when driving;
  • clanging when coming over speed bumps or other irregularities;
  • steering wheel vibration when driving on bad roads.

To diagnose the failure yourself, you can lift the vehicle and try to spin the wheel. Free play and hindered rotation indicate the need to replace.

Can the components be repaired?

In case of their failure, these parts have to be replaced. Depending on the generation of the vehicle, they can be changed either separately or together with the wheel hub.

How do I change the component on a Ford Focus myself?

If you have the repair skills, prepare 12- and 17-mm drive sockets, 21 mm combination wrench, hex key set, steering tie rod removal tool, crowbar, bearing race and seal driver set, hammer, and a torque wrench.

The steps will vary depending on the year of your car production. They might be the following:

  1. Hoist the vehicle and secure it.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Detach the tie rod end.
  4. Unscrew the CV axle fastener.
  5. Remove the brake caliper and disc.
  6. Detach the ball joint.
  7. Disconnect the ABS sensor if the component comprises it.
  8. Remove the steering knuckle.
  9. Press out the faulty component.
  10. Install a new one and carry out the assembly in reverse order. All fasteners must be tightened with a torque wrench observing the recommended tightening torque.
