The Volkswagen Sharan minivan is produced since 1995 till present. Assembling is performed in Portugal. The car took many prestigious awards. For example, this car was proclaimed the best car in its class by popular British magazines “Auto Express” and “What Car?” in 1996. In 1998 the car got the same award from the “Top Gear” magazine, and a year later “Auto Express” magazine called this car the “Best People Carrier”. The twins of this model are Seat Alhambra and Ford Galaxy.
History of Volkswagen Sharan cars
During the model existence period two generations and three restyled versions were produced. The first generation, 7M, became the result of collaboration between Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Company. The manufacturer marketed this model as the car for families with many children. Distinctive features of Ford and Volkswagen cars were combined in the appearance of VW Sharan minivan.
During restyling process in 2000 the car got a new dashboard, trapezoid headlights and bigger radiator grille, painted in the body colour. Side mirrors were replaced with more modern ones. The bumper grille was visually divided into three parts, black moldings appeared on the front and sides of the body. The car was again proclaimed the best minivan according to the “Auto Express” magazine.
The next restyling was performed in 2004. Turn indicators were built into the side mirrors. Moreover, design of the rear lights and brake lights was changed; the latter got more roundish contours. The list of available engines was extended with 2.0 l diesel power unit with a diesel particulate filter. And in 2006 the new modification of Sharan, which was able to run on petrol as well as on autogas, was launched.
The second generation, 7N, debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010. These cars, unlike their predecessors, were equipped with a wide sliding door. A prominent designer Walter Maria de Silva worked on 7N generation appearance. The car looked very stylish due to presence of chromed elements along the body perimeter, and wide bumper grille with rectangular fog lights on the sides. Headlights and rear lights were enlarged and became pentagonal. The rear part of the car got a spoiler with a built-in brake light, the door handle is now located near the number plate. The body got rid of mouldings and became 220 mm longer, 172 higher, but width was decreased by 70 mm. In 2012 to the available equipment list were included systems of road sign recognition, lane keeping, 18-inch light alloy wheel rims. The parking brake indicator was added to the dashboard.
Features of restyled II generation Volkswagen Sharan
The restyled car was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015. Renewed Volkswagen Sharan got LEDs, built into the headlights. Also the car is equipped with a trip computer with multifunctional Plus display. Moreover, the car is equipped with ISOFIX fastening for child seats in the minimum configuration.
Three-zone climate control “Climatronic” appeared in the list of available options; it allows to maintain comfortable temperature for all passengers. “Front Assist” system became available. It monitors the traffic situation and warns the driver in case of danger. In addition, the system performs emergency braking if necessary.
