VW NEW BEETLE reviews and experiences
The compact and charismatic Volkswagen New Beetle rolled off the production line in 1998 and was produced until 2010 in 3-door hatchback and 2-door convertible versions. The car became the excellent alternative to its remarkably popular predecessor – the Beetle. The car was manufactured in Puebla, Mexico. A year later after model launch, editors of popular American “Motor Trend” magazine awarded it as the “Import Car of the Year”.
History of Volkswagen New Beetle
The car was truly compact: body length of VW New Beetle hatchback was 4081 mm, width – 1724 mm and height – 1498 mm. The prototype of this model was unveiled at the 1994 North American International Auto Show in Detroit as “VW Concept 1”. And New Beetle convertible was firstly presented at the Geneva Motor show a year later. Despite positive public reaction, production model was released only in 1998. It has one generation and one restyled version. The car is created on the PQ34 platform with front transverse engine mounting.
In 1999 VW Motorsport presented the Cup – race modification of the car with VR6 2.8L engine with 204 hp. And in 2001 two more modifications were produced: RSi with 224 hp power unit and Sport Edition with two available engines: 150 hp and 170 hp. The latter modification equipment included spoiler, thatretracts automatically at speeds below 150 km/h. In 2005 the manufacturer presented the full-drive Ragster and the Dark Flint convertible with unusual body and interior colouring.
Features of restyled I generation Volkswagen New Beetle cars
Restyled version of the first model generation was presented at International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 2005. The model became bigger: by 48 mm in length, by 17 mm in width. Height of the body remained the same – 1498 mm.
The car started to look more elegant. Headlights and rear lights became oval, the bumper grille became streamlined and was now visually divided into three parts. Rear position lights were changed from big and round to small and rectangular.
By default New Beetle cars were equipped with ESP, front and rear disc brakes, ABS with brake force distribution function and differential locking. The car got maximum 5 stars according to Euro NCAP crash-test results.
