8.2/10

The SEAT Leon has been produced since 1999 until present. At first, the assembly was carried out in Spain and Belgium and today – in Spain only. In 2009, the German magazine Auto, Motor und Sport recognised this car as the best one in the import compact car segment. In 2013, the vehicle received the highest Euro-NCAP ratings. About two million units of the model have been sold since the start of production.

The history of Seat Leon

There are three generations and one facelift. The first generation, the 1M, was based on Volkswagen Golf with the five-door hatchback body-style. The new car was unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main. The Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro took part in its development. SEAT Leon hatchbacks had a three-segment grille, a bonnet with two prominent lines, narrow headlights, and mouldings on the body. At the rear end of the roof, there was a small spoiler. There were sports versions, called Cupra, equipped with 1.8-2.8 L engines outputting up to 204 hp. Besides, all-wheel-drive versions with independent suspension were available on sale. Both axles of all those vehicles were fitted with brake discs.

The 1P generation appeared in 2005. Italian designer Walter de Silva took part in its development. The car’s exterior features included rear handles hidden in the C-pillars. Windscreen wipers were hidden as well: when not in use, they were parked in decorative niches at the sides of the windscreen. The headlights, that were rectangular before, became almond-shaped. The grille became larger and got a chrome-plated rim. As for the interior, now, they offered seats with lateral support and the centre console decorated with silver inserts. The vehicles were equipped with ABS, air conditioning system, onboard computer, multimedia system with CD and MP3. After the 2009 facelift, the tailgate window and air intakes in the front bumper became larger. Bi-xenon headlight bulbs and the adaptive front-lighting system (AFS) were added to the list of optional extras.

The features of the SEAT Leon 5F

The 5F generation appeared at the Paris Motor Show in 2012. Nowadays, three- and five-door hatchbacks are available. They also offer an estate car and its all-wheel-drive version called Xperience. The latter has a bigger road clearance, black plastic bumper and wheel arch trims. In general, the exterior features more sharp lines that highlight its dynamism. Car body sides and bonnet became more sculptured, and headlights are adorned with lines of LED daytime running lights. In the passenger compartment, there is a multifunction steering wheel and a centre console is slightly curved to face the driver.

The vehicle is equipped with modern active and passive safety systems, like curtain airbags in addition to front ones. To provide assistance on the road, they offer active cruise control, driver fatigue detection system as well as collision avoidance system, traffic-sign recognition, lane keeping assist.
