Power steering oil transmits the pressure from the pump to the piston of the steering mechanism. It circulates in a closed system, and lubricates the components of the power steering. It cools them, protects them from corrosion and premature wear.

Depending on the composition, there are three main types of the fluid:

  • Mineral. They consist of purified paraffins and naphthenes by 85-98%. This kind of power steering oil helps to preserve the elasticity of rubber parts and is relatively inexpensive.
  • Synthetic. They contain polyatomic alcohols (ethylene glycol or propylene glycol), hydrocracked petroleum fractions, polyesters. They are characterised by a low viscosity, excellent anti-corrosion properties, and a wide operating temperature range. On the other hand, they produce a negative effect on rubber components, so they can be used only in power steerings with silicone elements.
  • Semi-synthetic. These are a blend of mineral and synthetic (poly-glycol) substances. They are characterised by resistance to foaming and oxidation, and effectively draw off heat.

All types can contain various additives that improve the performance characteristics. For example:

  • friction-reducing;
  • anti-foaming;
  • stabilising the viscosity and acidity parameters.

  • Replace the power steering oil together with the filter according to the intervals stated in the technical documentation of the vehicle. An unscheduled replacement will be necessary in particular after the installation of a new power steering as well as new tie-rods, a steering rack, a steering pinion, or other parts. A check of the system is necessary if the steering wheel is difficult to turn, there is a steering wheel freeplay, the mechanism makes noises, there is a burning smell in the passenger compartment, or liquid traces on the steering rack.
  • Every time you examine your car, check the amount and condition of the fluid in the reservoir. Any changes of the colour or thickness, as well as the drop in the fluid level clearly show that it has to be replaced or topped up.
  • If the amount of power steering oil reduces very quickly, check all the power steering components for leakage and fix it without any delays. Otherwise, many working elements of the steering mechanism might wear out fast.
  • Do not blend liquids of different types and brands. Only use the products that are recommended by the manufacturer. If you don’t have enough experience, entrust the fluid replacement to specialists of a vehicle repair shop.
