Opel Omega are business-class cars, which were produced since 1986 till 2003 in Germany, Brazil, Thailand. The vehicles were sold around the world under different names, for instance, Cadillac Catera – in North America, Vauxhall Omega – in Great Britain. In 1987 the model got “European Car of the Year” title, and in 1995 won “Continental Irish Car of the Year” award from Irish Car Manufacturers’ Association. Also, in 1995 the car was proclaimed “RJC Car of the Year” in Japan.

History of Opel Omega cars

The manufacturer presented two generations and two restyled versions of the model. The car was manufactured in sedan and station wagon bodies. The first generation, A, differed by progressive equipment. Some functions were rare for the European auto market of that time and was installed in the company’s cars for the first time. They are ABS, on-board self-test system, trip computer which is able to display average speed and current fuel consumption.

Restyling of the model was performed in 1990. The radiator grille became chromed and they started to paint the bumpers in body colour. Sportive versions of the car appeared – Evolution 500 and Lotus. The first one was presented, as the name implies, by 500 copies only and was equipped with 230 hp power engines. 907 units were produced in the second sportive series; they were equipped with 377 hp engines with double turbocharge.

In 1994 the manufacturer presented to public the second generation of Opel Omega station wagon and sedan – B. Such functions as radio-control of the central lock (since 1995), steering wheel height adjustment (since 1996), navigation system (since 1997) and others were available on these cars for the first time.

Features of restyled Opel Omega B cars

Presentation of restyled Omega B took place in 1999. The model was significantly transformed and got new proportions. The sedan became more elongated, its length was 4900 mm instead of 4787 mm earlier, width was 1775 mm, 11 mm less than that of the predecessor. Height of the car remained the same – 1455 mm.

The car front part and outer mirrors were more angular, and wide moldings around the perimeter were painted in body colour. The car had rather spacious luggage compartment: Omega station wagon – from 540 to 1800 liters, sedan – from 530 to 830 liters. The passenger compartment was quite commodious, and the renewed central console with GPS, air-conditioner and conveniently mounted control elements promoted comfortable car exploitation. The car was equipped with dual-zone climate-control in basic configuration.

Stability control system (ESP) and navigation system were available in these cars. Safety of the car was increased, in particular, active headrests appeared as well as ability to install Opelfix – fastening system for a child seat.
