7.9/10

Opel Meriva minivan was produced since 2003 till 2017 at the company’s factories in Zaragoza (Spain) and São José dos Campos (Brazil). In some countries the car was produced under other brands: in Great Britain – Vauxhall, in South America countries – Chevrolet. In 2010 the car won one of the most prestigious awards “Golden Steering Wheel” from “Bild am Sonntag”.

History of Opel Meriva cars

Totally, two generations and two restyled versions of the car were produced. FlexSpace technology was peculiar feature of this 5-seat minivan. Thanks to it, seats could be easily moved or removed, transforming the car passenger compartment into 2-, 3- or 4-seat cabin.

Opel Meriva A cars were notable for compactness: length was 4042 mm, width – 1694 mm, height – 1624 mm. They were equipped with Common Rail system engines – collaborative development of General Motors Powertrain and Fiat.

Restyling of the model was performed in 2006. Chrome cover on the radiator grille became wider, and fog lights were then built into the bumper grille, which was visually divided into three sections. The car rear part was decorated with chromed elements. Modifications with 6-speed gearbox and turbocharged diesel engine Ecotec appeared.

The manufacturer presented B generation in 2010. The car became longer than the predecessor by 246 mm and wider – by 118 mm. Car height was reduced by 9 mm, which caused positive impact on its aerodynamics. Meriva B minivan became the first car in the class, equipped with rear hinged doors, which had speaking common name – “suicide doors”. Their feature is the attachment of the rear edge to the rear pillar of the car. At the same time, the pillar between the front and rear doors remained. It is worth noting that this generation model got maximum five stars in the result of Euro NCAP crash-test.

Features of restyled Opel Meriva B cars

Restyled version of the second generation was presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main in 2013. But production officially ended in summer of 2017; successor of the model was Crossland X.

The cars differed from the predecessor by enlarged chromed radiator grille and large fog lights frames, decorated with chromed covers. The rear lights started to be equipped with LEDs.

Meriva design was developed in accordance with modern ergonomic standards. In basic configuration the cars were equipped with FlexDoors system, which presupposed opening of the doors at 90° angle, making passengers getting in and out easier. A multi-level floor which allows to increase loading volume to 1500 liters is presupposed for the luggage compartment.

The manufacturer paid much attention to minivan safety. Standard equipment of the model included: ABS, ESP, electric parking brake, hill start assist, ISOFIX fastening (for rear side seats) and other. It was more convenient to exploit the car thanks to pre-installed electric steering booster, electric-driven and heated outer mirrors, air-conditioner with recirculation system, audio system with display and six speakers.
