Characteristics of SAE 5W-50 motor oils

As a rule, products of this viscosity are used in high-load motors of passenger and commercial vehicles. Due to high viscosity they help to maintain compression in the worn-out motor cylinders.

5W symbols indicate the low-temperature limit, at which application of these products is possible. It equals −35 °С. It is advisable to use SAE 5W-50 motor oils at even higher temperatures. For instance, if the starter and battery have almost exceeded their safe usage date, such lubricants provide easier engine start due to the lower viscosity, as less effort is needed for crankshaft turning.

At heating up to 150 °С the dynamic viscosity of the products with 50 index remains at the high level and equals 3.7 mPa⋅s, while the kinematic one at 100 °С is equal to 16.3–21.9 mm2/s. It means that lubricants reliably protect the engine and are less apt to burning-out even at continuous intense loads.
