    Characteristics of SAE 0W-40 motor oils

    Double index in marking of this lubricant means that it is all-season: 0W characterizes its low-temperature, and 40 – its high-temperature operation properties.

    The letter W points at the fact that the product is made for winter use because it retains high fluidity in severe cold. The figure 0 shows the lubricant class. When using SAE 0W-40 oils, reliable and secure engine start is provided even at extremely low temperatures: from −40 °C and higher.

    The figure 40 is related to the capability of the product to retain viscosity level sufficient for creating the stable oil film on the surfaces of engine elements at heating. The minimum kinematic viscosity of lubricants of this category is 12.6 mm²/s, maximum – 16.3 mm²/s. The dynamic viscosity at shear velocity of 106 с-1 and the temperature of 150 °C is 2.9 mPa⋅s.
