History of Mitsubishi Lancer

The model is presented by eight generations. The first one was produced in 1973–1979 period in body versions of sedan, coupe and 5-door station wagon. In 1975 Celeste was presented – a 3-door liftback built on the platform of the model. In 1973 a sportive modification Lancer 1600 GSR was presented; it won Safari Rally and Southern Cross Rally repeatedly.

Cars of the second generation, which were produced from 1979 till 1983, were available only in a sedan body version. Within this generation, the manufacturer released modification with turbocharged 170 hp engines. The third generation was produced in 1983 in body version of a sedan; and in 1985, a new 5-door station wagon was launched, which was available with all-wheel drive since 1987. Production of the third generation sedans continued till 1988, while the station wagon cars were produced till 1990.

The fourth generation came out in 1988. The body range was added by a hatchback. The power unit, with which the car was equipped in this body version since 1990, had 4 valves for one cylinder for the first time in the model history. In the fifth generation, the station wagon was also renewed; it was produced till 2000. The sixth generation started to be sold in 1995. Evolution, the sport modification of this model, which was produced in 1996–2000 period, won World Rally Championship for four times.

The seventh generation went on sale in 2000. On the most markets Mitsubishi Lancer sedan was produced till 2007, and the station wagon, available from 2003, – till 2008; however, in some South American countries, production of this generation cars continues nowadays. Cars of the VIII generation, offered from 2007 till 2017, were built on the GS platform, developed by Mitsubishi Motors in collaboration with DaimlerChrysler. Mitsubishi patented monocoque body structure, RISE, was implemented in them; it served for protection of passengers and the fuel system in case of a road accident. Restyling of these cars was performed in 2010 and 2015.

Features of Mitsubishi Lancer VIII generation cars (second restyling)

Renewed Lancer sedan and 5-door hatchback are produced since 2015. First of all, changes affected exterior. The large radiator grille was divided by a horizontal bar, painted in body colour, which, together with side body skirts, positively affected car aerodynamics. In extended trim levels, the bi-xenon headlights are capable of turning, to light a bigger area of the road surface. And the round fog lights are framed with elegant LED strips of the daytime running lights.

Depending on the trim level, the list of features includes the lighting and rain sensors, automatic climate control, multifunction steering wheel, heated front row seats. A decent set of active and passive safety systems is also provided: the rear view camera, parking sensors, ABS with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), electronic stability and traction control (MASC/MATC), Brake Assist brake system booster. Moreover, seven airbags, seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters are used.
